Popular Backyard Activities for Adults
When most of us think of backyard activities, children come to mind. While children may enjoy being outside, they are not the only individuals who enjoy participating in backyard activities. In fact, many adults also enjoy being outside in their yards. Whether you are retreating your backyard alone or with some friends, you may want to think of some fun or relaxing backyard activities. This can easily be done by examining some of the most popular backyard activities, especially those that are designed with adults in mind.
As previously mentioned, many adults use their backyards to relax. If you are looking to do this, you may want to examine your backyard or patio furniture. The furniture that you have available may make it possible, or even impossible, to enjoy a relaxing afternoon in your yard. Popular furniture, used to help achieve relaxation, may include lounge chairs or hammocks. If you do not have any comfortable lawn or patio furniture, you may want to consider purchasing some. Most, on and offline retail stores, carry a fairly large selection of patio furniture.
Although many adults use their backyards as a source of relaxation, others use it for excitement. If you are looking for fun backyard activities, there are literally an unlimited number of things that you can do. These activities may include playing sports games, going for a swim, or having a barbeque. All of these backyard activities are ideal for individuals of all ages, especially adults.
If you are interested in playing sports games in your backyard, you will have to think about the games that you would be interested in playing. You may also want to examine whether or not you would be playing alone or with someone else. If you are interested in playing a game by yourself, basketball or a singles game of horseshoes may be ideal. In addition to being ideal for singles games, horseshoes and basketball are also great games for when more than one player is participating. Additional multiplayer games may include soccer, football, tennis, badminton, or volleyball.
The above mentioned games are ideal because just about everyone one can participate in them. Most backyards are able to accompany a number of different backyard sports games. However, to go swimming, you will have to have a pool. Even though pools are popular, not everyone has one. If you are unable to have an in-ground or an aboveground pool installed in your backyard, a kiddie pool maybe a nice alternative. While kiddie pools are designed with small children in mind, they are great for wading in hot weather, even for adults.
A barbeque is another backyard activity that is enjoyed by many adults. Since most households already have a grill, you may not have to purchase anything besides your food. If you do not have a barbeque grill, many small ones can be purchased for around twenty dollars. Barbeques are great backyard activities, all on their own, but they also work well in conjunction with swimming or other outdoor activities.
In addition to enjoying, the above mentioned, popular backyard activities for adults, you may also want to make up your own. Whether you create your own unique game or stick to traditional backyard games, it is likely that you will be pleased with your decision to entertain yourself outside. There are many adults that just enjoy being outside, even if they are not participating in anything particular.

What are MMORPG’s?
Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games or MMORPG’s as they are more commonly known, are role playing games which bring together large numbers of players via the internet.
A defining feature of MMORPG’s is that they all offer a persistent virtual world in which to play. These worlds often support thousands of simultaneous players, all of whom are playing a single character in the game.
What Does This Mean?
In a MMORPG you take control of a character (often known as an avatar) and guide its actions within the game. Most games offer an experience based level system – a player guides their character through certain tasks, such as killing a monster, and in return their ability to repeat similar tasks increases. This is usually represented by an overall skill level associated to the character, and sub levels representing individual skills.
As the worlds are persistent your skills are saved, meaning that the time and effort invested into the game is permanently reflected in your character.
For example if you played a combat orientated game your overall ability to fight may be represented by a Combat Level – this level would increase each time you gained a pre-determined number of experience points, granting more powerful abilities and skills. When you logout of the game everything is remembered so next time you play you can start from where you left off.
As MMORPG’s connect thousands of players with the same virtual world central game servers provide a synchronized experience for everybody. This means if you killed a specific monster then it would not only vanish from your screen, but also from that of all the other players.
Real time chat is usually available, typed messages can be displayed to other players in and round your location. Additionally it is common for MMORPG’s to allow trade between players as well as combat, duels and team work.
Playing As A Group
A great aspect of playing an MMORPG is that nearly every game provides a system for players to work together. This can be teaming up to tackle difficult enemies or pooling resources in order to advance the goals of the team. Such groups are known as clans or guilds.
Games Within Games
MMORPGS provide players with many different paths to follow and the players of the game literally define the world they play in. This includes many items within games being created by the players themselves using gathered resources.
This process is called Crafting, and is a very popular alternative to playing a combat orientated character. Rather that dominate physically, crafters are usually very wealthy in terms of in-game assets – selling their goods for game currency or other items.
Online or Offline?
Offline games are great for relaxation and enjoyment, but they can not offer the combination of depth and social interaction that MMORPG’s provide. Character progression is the essential ingredient letting you concentrate on the aspects of the game you enjoy without worrying about those you don’t.
Every character starts with similar levels and skills, but quickly you will personalize your character meaning few others will be exactly like you.
If you love playing computer games then try an MMORPG. Once you start playing you will never look back.
Playstation Vita’s LiveArea And Near – An Overview Of Their Usefulness
Every once in a while a video game system comes up with something that we’ve never seen before. Nintendo was the first company to produce a system with viable motion based gameplay and a handheld with a touchscreen. Microsoft’s Kinect gives you the ability to become a controller while you’re playing their games. The Playstation 3 gives you a completely immersive networking experience, both with other players and with other devices. With giants like that, it seems like the Vita is going to have to work hard to make its mark, but I don’t think it’s worried because it has a unique little gem called Near.
Near works a lot like the 3DS’ Street Pass system that rewards players that come close to each other on the street, in stores, or just while driving between destinations. The thing is, Near takes things to an entirely new level as opposed to Street Pass. Utilizing either Wi-Fi hot spots or AT&T’s 3G network, Near shows you any Vita users in your area as well as what games they are playing and what games they have played. The Near map is set up kind of like a bullseye with you in the center that shows roughly how far away and in what direction the other players are.
Probably the best part of Near is that you don’t just get to see what other people are playing, it also lets you interact with the other players you see on your map as well. You can send messages and friend requests or even invite them to chat with you. Near also has the unique function of being able to leave in-game gifts for players in your area who are playing the same games as you. The gifts you can leave vary from game to game but can range from things as simple as leaderboard challenges to in game bonuses and perks like increased experience or bonus items.
LiveArea is another awesome function the Vita has, much like Near. It lets you see what other people nearby are playing and also gives you a timeline of their gameplay and trophy achievements. You can see your friends snag that tough gold or platinum trophy and then leave a comment, tip, or challenge on it much like you can with popular social networking sites.
Once you’ve met new friends with Near and LiveArea, the Vita gives you the option to keep in touch much the same way you would through a console experience with the Vita’s Party option. You can chat or text chat even if your friends are playing different games or using different apps. Party also makes joining multiplayer games with your friends a snap, giving you the option to simply hop into a match with other players in your favorite games and even bookmark groups to reconnect to later for your favorite titles. Near and far, the Vita is giving players around the world a chance to connect like never before with the Playstation Vita.
Why I Love Strategy Games
A strategy game is one in which the skills of the play and his decision making combine to influence the outcome. Usually, strategy games come in the form of video, board or computer games. Most games involve some strategy of some sort, however, those classified as strategy games tend exact the decision making skills of the player to determine more than half of the final scores. The word strategy echoes from the military meaning military planning and tactics to achieve results. This is in contrast to games in which players can rely to a large extent on probability to win.
Strategy games vary widely and can be found with different themes. Some of the genres include abstract strategy, war games, real time tactics or strategy games, simulation, building of cities and God games. In war games for instance, there is usually an extensive simulation of past military battles involving great leaders such as Alexander the Great, some Roman Emperors and even world wars I and . The player is usually required to take on the role of an important military person such as a general or commander or even an ordinary soldier who literally has an “impossible” mission to save the day. Traditionally, strategy games are played with physical miniatures or on a board. With the advent of the internet, however, one can find many online strategy games to play of for those who prefer, they can download strategy games.
In addition, there are also real time strategy games and real time tactics strategy games. The former apply to certain computer games, such as NukeZone, Blizzards Warcraft and Starcraft, where the player has to make quick decisions and take fast action as the games state change constantly. The latter however, concentrates more on control and operational aspects of warfare. Examples include the Close Combat and Total War series.
Simulation strategy games attempt or use real life situations as themes. Thus the player’s decisions and actions result in similar consequences as it would be in real life. Abstract strategy games, on the other hand do not necessarily use real life themes. The player must understand the logic to win the game. This includes games such as Go, Chess, Checkers. Many free online strategy games can be played on the internet as well.
God strategy games are those in which the player assumes the role of God with everything else subject to him. The challenge is to find ways and means to overcome such unbridled power. Games in this genre include Populous, Black&White and God’s Playing Field which is a free online strategy game.
Economic strategy games usually simulate real life business and require the player to win in a business or economic situation. Some examples are Monopoly, Transport Tycoon, Supreme Ruler 2010, Capitalism and Railroad Tycoon. City building strategy games also allow the player to build and manage a city. There are arguments as to whether games such SimCity and City Building Games series employ the player’s analytical skills at all. Nevertheless, they are considered as strategy games. There are also the turn based strategy games (TBS) which forces the user to think about the game first before committing to play. They are different from the real time counterparts in that sense.
As with many other things, the advent of the internet has changed the face of gaming. Most people especially kids and teens prefer to play games online, whether it is strategy or puzzle or from any other category. To meet these demands, there are a number of quality websites offering quality free online strategy games. There is no need to download anything, nor is there any need for plug-ins. Literally, playing online multiplayer strategy games is just a mouse click away.
As time rolls on, we are likely to see many more free strategy games available for game lovers to choose from. Certainly this is a good sign.
5 Ways Nintendo can Climb to the Top
5: Shifting Media Man
Nintendo needs to ditch mini-disks and cartridges and publish games on full size compact disks. It will help get rid of your “cute, fuzzy, little kid image.”
4: Deadline Driving for 8 Billion Red Coins
Don’t hype up a game until you’re sure you can release it on time. You get me all worked up about a game like Twilight Princess and then push it back, and back, and back until you’ve pushed back into another console! It gets old! Stop doing it. Finish the game then tell people about it six month before you release it. Problem solved.
3: Footrace with Sony the Quick
It’s a little late for this one Nintendo, but you need to beat Sony to the market if you can. Get your Revolution hardware out and in our hands and take our dollars as soon as possible because after we buy an X-Box 360, 4 controllers, and a hard drive we’re probably going to have enough money for just one Next Gen system. If you can beat Sony to the market and suck up 0 bucks plus the cost of controllers, games, and memory cards people won’t be willing to shell out the 0 bucks plus games and accessory money for Play Station III.
2. Nintendo’s Image Lost
You need to fix your image, you have the 3-9 year old market cornered, and nobody can touch you, but now its time to graduate to the big leagues. If you want to survive and latch onto the adult audience I suggest buying a well-known franchise like Grand Theft Auto or create one and make it a Nintendo exclusive. Remind people Nintendo started the age of multiplayer console shooters with Goldeneye.
1. To the Top of the Mountain
Last, but not least, you seriously need to get a better shell for your controller. I personally like it and think it’s brilliant, but people aren’t ready for it yet. You need to have a more traditional controller for your next gen system. I’m NOT SAYING YOU SHOULD GET RID OF THE MOTION SENSOR, but definitely scrap the remote control look.
The Graphics War Behind The Nintendo Wii
It seems like every time I flip through the latest issue of a gaming magazine or begin to browse any kind of website with the “top/latest gaming news” they seem to be rambling on and on about how amazingly lifelike or jaw-droppingly realistic the graphics are. In fact, it looks like there’s plenty of games out there who are foregoing the quality that made games popular in lieu of putting out games with the highest quality graphics or the most realism available. Don’t get me wrong, I love a game that looks nice just as much as the next guy, but as nice as good graphics are, they shouldn’t be the sole selling point for a game.
This is where the Wii really takes the lead in the console race, despite its lower graphical capabilities, Nintendo consistently puts out amazing games. For example, out of the “Big 3” which of these consoles has more games for multiple simultaneous players (and I don’t mean over an online network) than any other? Hands down, it’s gotta be the Wii. Whether you’re playing a classic party game like Mario Party or Fortune Street or you’re breaking out Smash Bros. Brawl for the millionth time, the Wii is the console you turn to when you’ve got friends over.
That’s just talking about multiplayer and party games, though. The Wii doesn’t disappoint with its single player adventures either. With iconic games like the Legend of Zelda series and Super Mario Bros. games, the Wii pulls of hit game after hit game even though it’s not using an HDMI cable to attach itself to the back of your TV. In fact, the retro styled graphics that Nintendo builds many of its franchises on have great appeal with gamers that grew up on the 8 and 16-bit systems. Nothing conjures up fond memories like the bleep bloop music and classic graphics of the NES or SNES and the Wii only plays on that further by bringing back such classic games for us to enjoy.
Now touching on some of the points other consoles may make, Xbox and the Playstation 3 can put out fantastic quality games as well, with top of the line graphics to boot. People look like people and environments are often larger than life with cities built to scale and landscapes that seem to stretch on for miles. There’s two problems I’ve seen with this, though. Often a game is hyped on its “realism” or its high intensity graphics or rendering only to fall short in its gameplay because so much time was spent on its graphical development. So much is invested in the setting that games lose their grip on the journey through it.
In short: don’t count the Wii out just because it’s not pumping out Blu-ray quality graphics in its titles. While a game with high powered graphics can often have great gameplay as well, be sure to consider your options and read reviews carefully. If you count out a game (or the Wii in general) because its graphics don’t look like when you look out your window, you’re going to be missing out on a ton of great games.
3 Reasons Why The Wii Is Still A Competitive Console
On the gaming market nowadays, all you seem to hear is about the newest high-def games for the Xbox and PS3, while the Wii seems to have generally taken a sort of back burner to the both of them. Because some of the high profile releases aren’t making it to the Wii as well, people seem to think that it’s out of the console race but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Here’s why the Wii is going to still be a core console until the day its successor hits shelves:
1. Price: The overall price of the Wii is what makes it appealing even to this day. With the console barely topping 0 for new units, it’s up to half the price of its competitors, which makes it more affordable for parents and eaves gamers with more money in their pockets to buy games and software that they would have to put towards the console purchase with other systems. On top of that, Wii games generally average -50 on release (even multi-platform releases being often as low as -55) which means you can get more games for cheaper when compared to other console releases.
2. Quality: Nintendo has always been ahead of its time and has been an innovator in the gaming industry since its conception. Even now, Wii games are pushing and testing the limits of the system’s hardware while also giving gamers new, fun ways to enjoy their games every day. Also, Wii games are never filled with fluff or cut short for DLC. When you purchase a Wii game, you can be assured that every part of the game is going to be on the disc (no costly micro-transactions that will add up later over time) as well as knowing that you’re in for a hearty adventure no matter the game. While many new games are trounced by skilled gamers in a matter of hours, Wii games are built with replay value and overall length in mind, often giving up 20-25+ hours of gameplay for most of its titles.
3. Quantity: Maybe it’s because the Wii was the first of the “Big 3” next gen consoles to see release or maybe it’s because of the heavy cooperation with 3rd party developers. Whatever the reason, the Wii currently holds the title of largest gaming library of the three consoles. It has the most games across the largest variety of genres hands down. Particularly when it comes to multiplayer and cooperative games for simultaneous same-screen play, the Wii has the biggest list of titles to choose from.
Whether you’re a new gamer or a diehard Nintendo fan, don’t worry. The Wii may seem like it’s down, but it’s hardly out of the race yet and to top it off, it still has several big releases before the end of its sales life. If you don’t already have a Wii, then I hope this is enough to convince you that it’s a great investment that’s going to bring hours and hours of fun and enjoyment to you and your family.

Miniclip Games Their Friendly User Ability And Ease Of Installation
My family and I found MiniClip games in 2003 while surfing the web for free downloadable games for our kids. We were pleasantly surprised when at that time our Windows 98 and our measly 64 MB of memory was able to run the game we wanted to download. We became more shocked; when the only extra software we needed to run the games were Macromedia Flash Player and Shockwave, which thanks to other programs we already had installed.
As time progressed we loved the fact that the games were user friendly, had no Adware or Spyware, or required large file downloads. Having Dial-up Internet small file sizes were extremely important. Each of the Games we played loaded easily and we used our mouse or keyboard to play them, saving us money on having to purchase additional items such as game pads or joysticks.
The free games we have downloaded have no time limit before you had to buy or quit using it. With over a 900 different games to choose from you are sure to find some old favorites such as Pac Man, Space Invaders, Battle Ship and more. There are also newer games such as Dancing Bush, Snow Boarding, and Ridge Racer. There are Multiplayer games, Sports Games, and my personal favorite Word Games, and game geared for kids of all ages, plus with many more to choose from, I am sure you will find a game to play.
One of our favorite games that we have found to play is called Trap Shoot, where you pick your own character each having their own special firearm. Then you decide your target, it can range from Clay Pigeons to Chickens and even Beer Cans. The game level begins fairly easy starting at two targets and then with each level you complete the target amount increases. The game continues until you miss your target level, after which the game restarts from the beginning.
The only drawback we found at the time with this game and a few others was the lack of instructions on how to play the game. However more and more of their games have help links and instructions included. As such I recommend trying the game you want to download online first, to see how easy it is to play and whether or not it contains playing instructions. There are also example plays to guide you along so don’t get discouraged and remember we have not by any means played all of them.
For those you have found your favorite game but seem to beat it every time you play, there is now a try/buy sections where many of their free versions are even harder to defeat. With the option to try and then buy, you get to see if the newer or harder version is the right game for you without losing money. There are also 5 Minute games for those of us who need a break but do not have the luxury of free time to begin something more complex.
I hope you and your family find these games as much fun as we have and remember that this is just my opinion and not anyone else.
Parent’s Guide to Online Gaming, Part 2
In part 1 we talked about online gaming and your children, including FPS games and exposure to violent content. We wrap up this week by talking about RTS games, MMORPGs and the additional threats of addiction and social predators.
RTS stands for Real Time Strategy. Strategy because these games generally take a much larger perspective, casting the player as a general or commander of an army or even the leader of a civilization rather than as a single person. Real Time because the action moves forward whether the player acts or not. The alternative to Real Time is turn-based strategy, where each player moves in turn, taking whatever time they need. Turn based games tend to have deeper strategic components and complex non-military progressions that make them less popular with children. RTS games are a relatively benign genre, as they abstract the violence and conflict out to at least the unit level, removing much of the graphic gore found in FPS games and reducing it to numbers and lost units. They also tend to have complicated decision structures, making playing them a good exercise in critical thinking. Those same quick, complex decisions make this type of game difficult to look away from, particularly if the player is competing online where there may not be a pause button. Due to the less graphic content, this type of game doesn’t require as intense parental scrutiny as some others may, but it’s a good idea at least to casually observe a game and possibly to learn what the loading screen looks like so you can tell when “Just a minute” means “I’m in the middle of something,” and when it means “I just don’t want to do whatever you want me to do.”
MMORPG stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. They are descended from older, single player, RPGS. In this context, an RPG is a game that tells an evolving story using characters defined by various skills, attributes, and professions. The Massively Multiplayer part of the name comes from the fact that there can be upwards of several thousand players in a game world that may have surface area to rival small states. It is difficult to express how large and complicated these games can be. Accept that your children will talk about things you don’t understand, often about equipment or items they’ve acquired or battles they’ve fought. Put on your best “That’s nice dear” face and let it go. While it never hurts to try out the games your children play, you wont get nearly as much benefit from logging on to a MMORPG for a bit to see what its like, as they require a sizeable time investment to even get a feel for what’s going on.
That time investment gives rise to one of the biggest problems with MMORPGs. A gaming writer once suggested that MMORPG should be pronounced Morgue, because once you go in, you never come out. If your children are starting to get heavily into this type of game, watch how they spend their time. The game will always present something new to do, some greater hill to climb, and it can be easy to get caught up. Talk with your kids, make sure they know the limits on how much of their time they can spend playing, and what they need to get done first. That said; understand that they are often going to be playing the game with other people, to whom they may have made some degree of commitment. Be flexible and use your judgment when deciding whether to let them keep playing. Generally, it’s better not to let them start if you aren’t sure then to try to get them to stop once they’ve begun. Lean toward get your homework done first over quit in time to get your homework done.
Playing a game with thousands of others will expose your children to a wide variety of people. Most of them will be harmless, some will be helpful and a few will likely come to be good friends. However, there are a select few with malicious intent, just as there are in any large group. The fear here is much like that felt in letting your children use chat rooms or instant messaging service. The good news is that the type of real social predator parents fear are far less likely to in a game world, because the game itself is much more complicated than simply logging on to a chat room. Make sure your kids know that the danger exists, that they shouldn’t let anyone know anything more than generalities about whom they are outside the game, that there are bad people in the world. Ask them about their friends online, see what they know about them, watch for the same warning signs you would with any stranger that spends a lot of time with your kids. Again, most players are harmless or better, but you’re far better off being informed and watchful than complacent and hopeful.
We’ve barely touched the surface of the possibilities of online gaming, but hopefully you are better informed about what your children may be doing. Gaming is as good as any hobby and better than many. It has a lot of positive developmental benefits, but as with any activity out of your control there are things to watch for. Make clear, knowledgeable decisions about what’s right with your kids and stick to them. In the long run, they’ll thank you for it.
Finding A Good Online Fighting Game
Playing a fighting game online is a great way to cut loose and blow off a little steam. There are all kinds of online fighting games out there, so it is just a matter of finding one that appeals to you. It all depends what you’re looking for. A lot of people like online shooting games. These can vary from space combat simulators to side scrolling shooters, to first person shooters.
In my opinion, there are a few major factors that determine which games are the best for you personally. One of them is what type of scenario you like best. Do you want something modern, futuristic, historical, or fantastic? Setting can definitely affect how much you enjoy your online fighting game.
Another factor is whether the online fighting game is a one player game, a player versus player game, or a multiplayer online game where you can challenge people from all over the world. In my opinion, the latter is more exciting, but some people like to play against the computer rather than to compete with strangers.
Of course, the most important factor in choosing an online fighting game is playability. No matter how cool the scenario, how nice the graphics, and how intense the the competition, a game with poor playability is not going to be that exciting in the long run. A good game will have intelligent opponents, sophisticated arcade controls, and realistic movement. If your game doesn’t have all of these, it will probably wear thin for you pretty soon.
Another thing to consider when selecting an online fighting game is how long you want to play it for. Some online fighting games are actually more like campaigns – designed to be played for hours at a time. Other ones are arcade video games, made so that you can play them for 5 or 10 minutes at a time and still get a good game playing experience. If you are just looking for something to play for a couple minutes now and then while blowing off steam from work, I definitely recommend the latter. Playing the wrong online fighting game, after all, can suck you in for more time than you have, stopping you from getting your work done. I know what it is like to get stuck in online video games for more time than you have. I’ve lost whole days to that from time to time. If you are just beginning, you should be cautious. It can happen to you too!
Online games started long ago
When did the Internet game scene first start? Well not in the early 1990s when mainstream America started to get Internet connectivity in their homes at an amazingly slow dial up speed. Actually, Internet games started almost forty years ago in the late 1960s according to most games fanatics. And, not unlike most great creations, the game field really began to take off in educational institutions across America. Some of the first colleges to introduce games to the world were MIT and the University of Illinois.
A system known as Plato ran games that people could play that were developed for its capacity. These games of course became widely popular amongst students, ate tons of computer resources as usual, got a slap by the administration, and spawned a truly wild game craze. Other games were developed for the Plato system. Some of these games were multiplayer and some were not. Great games like Avatar and Aircraft, and early flight simulators were introduced to the world on Plato. Some trekkie type games were also developed on this early multi player capable platform.
Some other great game developments happened at an educational institution across the pond, in England, at Essex University, throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s. The most popular gaming phenomenon that came out of Essex was a Multi User Dungeon (Mud). People at the University loved this game, and its popularity began to spread across the world as users gained access to the source code and started sharing the application with every gamer they knew. Free gaming owes a lot to this wonderful early program.
In the early 1980s, corporations started to the see the possibilities of getting every teenager in the world addicted to their products. A corporation by the name of Kesmai developed games for Compuserve and together they began serving up great product like Islands of Kesmai and Megawars 1. A user basically had to pay by the hour to play some of these early games, and Compuserve was having a blast getting paid some pretty good rates exceeding ten dollars an hour for game play.
In the 1980s, after the success of Kesmai and Compuserve, the gaming industry was beginning to really take off. Companies like General Electric and Quantum Computer were starting to offer monthly subscription fees to access their gaming nirvana. Kesmai at this point really began to elevate the gaming scene when they began introducing the gaming community to Air Warrior. The company also brought gamers Stellar Warrior and Stellar Emperor. Quantaum introduced Rabbit Jack’s casino at this time.
The late eighties saw the introduction of the AppleLink by Quantum for Apple II computer users, and parents everywhere started screaming at their kids to get away from the games. And the parents were of course right, except if you went to go work in the gaming industry, and then you probably made more than your parents.
All About Warhammer Fantasy
You have probably heard of Warhammer and Warhammer 40k, and if you have not then chances are you have seen the excellent computer game Dawn of War.
Games Workshop are the masterminds behind these epic franchises. As the largest tabletop battle games company in the world, Games Workshop are also responsible for the more recent games based on the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
A Little History
Warhammer Fantasy Battle was the first game to be set in Warhammers alternate middle earth realm. Since its release in 1983 Warhammer has inspired generations of table top gamers, introducing them to painting and collecting the miniature models that represent battlefield units.
Warhammer 40k is Games Workshops futuristic version of the original game, set in the far future. Post apocalyptic societies struggle to control the galaxy, finding strange alien races and evil around every corner. This franchise was brought to wide media attention with the release of Dawn of War on the PC in 2004.
The Warhammer Fantasy Franchise
The Warhammer fantasy franchise encompasses table top games, role-playing games, card games, computer games, books, magazines and comics. Games Workshop is famous for the hard line it takes against impersonators and those who try and sell fake versions of their products, specifically the miniatures needed to play the table top games.
25 years of game development has produced an amazingly rich and detailed world. The official website lists over 200 written resources for Warhammer Fantasy. Additionally many older products are no longer in print or are unavailable.
The depth of information is staggering. Historical, religious and political histories are available for each of the 15 major armies used in the game.
Warhammer Fantasy inspires amazing artwork. Books produced as part of the worlds background feature stunning illustrations. Fans of the franchise also produce spectacular artwork of their own – often rivalling the official artists.
An Expensive Hobby
Warhammer has come a long way from those early days. Games Workshops commercial attitude to the franchise has turned many unsuspecting people into serious hobbyists who are almost addicted to the system.
Miniatures are supplied unpainted and unassembled, much like an airfix model. To collect, build and paint armies consisting of hundreds of models is not for the faint hearted! Add to this the need to create scenery and model buildings and you begin to appreciate the time, effort and money that fans invest into Warhammer.
Warhammer And The Future
The Warhammer franchise appears to be eternal. Games Workshop are clearly willing to move with the times as demonstrated by the release of several computer games in the past decade.
The impending release of a Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) – Warhammer: Age of Reckoning – based in the Warhammer fantasy world is adding to the reputation of this gaming giant. Nearly 600,000 people have signed up hoping to get a sneak preview of the game, providing solid evidence that Warhammer is now firmly in the mainstream.

Xbox 360 is the coolest system since Nintendo 64! The Xbox 360 is a purely awesome gaming console, with hours and hours of fun attached. All the features on this baby leaves the owner speechless! The Xbox 360 has countless games for it and it’s only been out for about a year!
Games such as Halo 3, Guitar Hero 3, and Bio Shock are included in the 360. Halo 3 is about a futuristic war against Aliens and Humans. Halo 3 includes a multiplayer feature which is always updating so it never gets old. Guitar Hero 3 is a game where you are able to play many classic songs. Got Dial Up?
Forget Online Gaming
Computer games have come a long way since electronic checkers and the like. Today, we’ve got computer games that would put some 21st century movies to shame and interest in online gaming is catching on like some kind of crazy fever. Once dominated by males aged 25 and older, today’s gaming generation includes mom, sis, aunt, even grandma and grandpa! If you think you’ve caught the online gaming bug, and you’re thinking about becoming a participant, don’t even think you can join in on this online fun using a dial up Internet connection!
Part of the fascination with online gaming lies in its speed. During play, online gaming becomes a virtual world and in order to project a sense of reality into the mix, its games are fast, its movements are smooth, and its sounds are as realistic as we hear them in the natural world. Sitting in front of an online game, and actively participating in one puts the player in another world – a world that’s so different, so cool, and so real.
No, we’re not talking about a super-fancy version of checkers or backgammon. We’re not talking about a visually rich game of tic-tac-toe. We’re talking about full-fledged networked or multiplayer gaming that allows anyone to entertain themselves and hoards of others across the world at the same time. Multiplayer games play over online but trust us when we say any old Internet connection won’t do.
If you want to get in on this craze, you’re going to have to ditch the old dial up connection that you might have and get into broad band. A broadband Internet connection will give you the ability to send and receive highly detailed and realistic imagery at an appropriate speed. It will give you the means to watch videos in real time, and it will allow you to experience speech as if each and every other player were speaking to you directly.
A dial up Internet connection just can’t handle this kind of fun, but you can get a broad band connection just as easily. For the techies out there, broadband is a type of data transmission in which a single medium (wire) can carry several channels at once. 1 For the rest of us, broadband is an Internet connection that allows several people to send and receive data at the same time. A dial up connection doesn’t do that. A dial up connection can either send or receive – but it certainly can’t do both. Let’s talk about Broadband ISDN for a minute.
ISDN stands for integrated services digital network and it can transmit transmitting voice, video and data over fiber optic telephone lines at about 64 Kbps (64,000 bits per second).
Most ISDN lines offered by telephone companies give you two lines at once, called B channels. You can use one line for voice and the other for data, or you can use both lines for data to give you data rates of 128 Kbps, three times the data rate provided by today’s fastest modems.2
Broadband ISDN – a combination of regular broadband and ISDN can transmit voice, video and data over fiber optic telephone lines at about 1.5 million bits per second (bps). It’s a much faster connection than either broadband or ISDN alone! If your ISP offers Broadband ISDN, ask for it – your online gaming adventure will be the better for it.

Online gaming community
When it comes to the success of online arcade games, you will find that it is supported by the many dedicated online communities that help support these arcade games.
These games have stood against time and they have struggled through the many technological advances that have ruined a lot of games in the past because of the graphical capabilities.
The online community regularly conducts tourneys for arcade games with huge prize money at stake.
In May 1007, Xbox came out with a new Pac-Man and it conducted a championship in New York for the championship title of highly successful and popular game.
Nine finalists from around the world fought each other for a one of a kind Pac-man inspired Xbox 360 console, 100,000 Microsoft points, and a Pac-Man Live Arcade Trophy.
As for the finalists, you will find that they came from all over the world. They were arcade leaders from Japan, USA, Europe, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and even Mexico.
When it comes to the reason for the online arcade you will find that there is a huge demand for these multiplayer games. You will also find that these games have survived decades and pressed on through intense competition.
The resurgence of arcade titles on consoles and handhelds is another reason for the growing arcade communities. The online arcade communities have made sure that arcade games are here to stay.
The arcade games have shown intense surviving skills because they have made it through the test of home entertainment systems to moving on to the internet. The arcade communities have played a huge part in seeing the genre through the hardest of times.
When it comes to the internet you will find that these gaming communities are in a rise, because these communities are very closely related that it’s almost like being a cult. You will want to keep in mind that competing with these games is like a new game genre.
First Video Game Systems to the Latest in Gaming Consoles
The history of video games has come a long way. Today, you will see video game consoles integrated with state-of-the-art graphics technology and amazing sound quality that can rival your home entertainment systems. There are even gaming consoles that has different features that can rival your home PC.
For example, you will find that some gaming consoles available today have realistic graphics and Hollywood-like acting. Computer generated 3D characters even contains facial expressions and body movements almost similar to the real thing.
If you play with these consoles, you will see that the characters in it move very much like real people. But, in fact, these characters are the product of the latest 3D technology available. Not only that, characters in these games even have human like features. Some even have beards, different eye colors, and some even have hairs that moves just like the real thing.
Other integrated features that you will see in some gaming consoles available in the market today are the memory cards, where you can save your game progress, joysticks and steering wheels to add a little more realism to driving and flight simulation games, simulated guns to add realism to shooting games, and even vibration feedback to controls.
There are even gaming consoles available in the market today that can be connected to the internet. With these feature, you can join multiplayer games in the internet and play with other people from all over the world. So, if you get bored fighting AI (artificial intelligence) from regular games, you can buy a game that is available for massively multiplayer online role playing games or MMORPG.
However, before you go out and buy the real thing, you should know where all these games started. Just like any other invention, gaming consoles or gaming systems started out as having rough graphics, simple sounds and very simple game play.
In the early years of video game systems, you will find that it all started out in a simple game that was called “Tennis for Two”. This particular video game was introduced back in 1958 and was consisted of two horizontal lines across the screen, and a short perpendicular line that represented the net.
This particular game was the root of all video games and from here, video game developers started competing and producing different games and came to the point of having great graphics and sound quality.
In the mid 70s, a company called Atari came out with a video game system that revolutionized the world of video games. It was called the Video Computer System or VCS. This system became one of the hottest selling gaming systems in its day. As you see today’s latest gaming system, you will find it hard to believe that people even bought these things.
However, you have to consider the fact that in the past, because of the early technology in graphics and sounds, and 3D graphics were virtually non existent, these video gaming systems were considered as state-of-the-art. And, many people enjoyed playing with it. If you were born in this era, and played with these video game systems, you know how much fun it is to play with.
Integrated with simple graphics, simple sound effects and simple game play, it was relatively easy to play with. The whole family can really spend hours on end to play with video game systems in the past. Everyone can play with these simple machines, even children.
Today, since game developers are taking games to another level, adding realistic graphics and realistic sounds, each game are now rated by the ESRB or the Entertainment Software Rating Board. You will see that each of the gaming title will contain letters, such as E, T, M, and AO. These letters represent on who can play the game. E represents Everyone, T represents Teens only, M for Mature gamers, and AO represents Adults Only.
More and more games today are integrated with realism of violence and gore where it can really affect your child’s psychology. This is why it is important for you to check the ESRB rating before buying a particular game.
There are even games available today that can recreate the battlefield in World War II. You can even see bodies around the simulated Normandy beach that are either decapitated or a realistic person spurting blood calling out for a medic.
You can easily see how long video game systems have come in terms of graphics and sound quality.
Finding Computer Game Cheats
Anyone who lies can be called a cheater or a cheat. In school, when you “cheat” it is understood that you have copied others’ answers or from a source, say a book, during an exam. Between you and your lover, it could mean having an affair with another or simply lying. In sports, it means getting ahead of your opponent in a manner that violates the rules of the game.
But cheating in computer games is not necessarily equal to lying or taking unfair advantages over your opponent. It constitutes a wide spectrum of activities, which in general is aimed at altering the game experience so as to lead in the game. Cheating differs in every computer game and is dependent on what the players have agreed upon as an unfair advantage.
Most computer games have the so-called “cheat codes,” which are used to make the game easier. But these cheat codes are designed for single players, especially those new to the game. Using these codes could also mean cheating, but it cannot be said that you are using them to gain unfair advantage.
Unjust computer game cheat is most prevalent in multiplayer and mass multiplayer computer games played through the Internet. In these types of computer games, players may remain anonymous and so they can boldly cheat, without fear of being known to his opponents.
There are different types of computer game cheats. These are by changing the user settings, by using bugs, exploits and external software and by cheesing.
When you alter the settings of your computer, the layout of the computer hardwares or the game itself so that it would suit your gaming style or your computer system, you are in a way cheating. But this can be acceptable. However, going as far as modifying the color and brightness of your computer in order to see through shadowy areas could be questionable.
Exploits are features of a game unintentionally or erroneously made by the developers. When particularly used to gain unfair advantage over your opponent, they can be regarded as computer game cheats. However, sometimes these exploits make the game more fun and exciting.
The use of external softwares specially designed to let the player lead the game unjustly by modifying the program that runs the computer game, is considered as a grave way of cheating. Some of these computer game cheats analyze the status of the game in the computer’s RAM.
Other players “cheese” to lead in the game. This is done when virtual players do things that are not allowed or are unlikely in real life. Although this may not be a very grave kind of computer game cheat, most players disapprove cheesing in a game.
Usually, computer game cheats nowadays are due to alterations made in the game software. This is in spite of the developers’ prohibition of the modification of the original codes. The problem with most game softwares you can find in the market nowadays is that despite their being encrypted, data files can be easily revised without altering the main program so cheat protection features become useless.
Stopping all forms of computer game cheats is really hard because as said earlier, cheating in computer games cover a wide range of activities and there are a lot of aspects to consider in each computer game cheat. There are softwares, though that can be installed on the server in order to help detect a computer game cheat.
Online Arcade Gaming Community
The success of online arcade gaming can be attributed to the huge number of dedicated online communities that support arcade games.
These games have stood their ground at a time when technological advances have paved way for hardcore graphic systems capable of rendering movie like graphics.
The online community regularly conducts tourneys for arcade games with huge prize money at stake.
Xbox Live conducted a Pac-man championship in New York in May of 2007.
Nine finalists from around the world fought each other for a one of a kind Pac-man inspired Xbox 360 console, 100,000 Microsoft points, and a Pac-Man Live Arcade Trophy.
Finalists were selected based on scores of Xbox LIVE Arcade leader box from Japan, USA, Europe, Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Canada and Mexico.
The primary reason for a spurt in the online arcade community is the rise of a huge number of multiplayer arcade games.
Arcade games are from another era that is hard pressed to survive an intense competition. This is the primary reason for the close knit nature of arcade gaming communities.
The resurgence of arcade titles on consoles and handhelds is another reason for the growing arcade communities. The online arcade communities have made sure that arcade games are here to stay.
Arcade games have shown an immense resilience surviving everything from consoles to the Internet. The arcade communities have played a huge part in seeing the genre through the hardest of times.
With the advent of internet, these communities saw a massive rise in numbers. These communities are closely knitted and work as a single entity when it comes to competing game genres.
Is Playstation Plus Worth It – Yay Or Nay?
No matter where you’re playing games, it seems like you’re getting offered an upgraded, expanded, or premium service on top of their basic free plans. When it comes down to it, you have to take a few things into consideration when you’re looking at these different services and comparing them to each other as well as comparing them to their basic, free plans. You should be asking yourself questions like “What does the premium service offer me that the basic one doesn’t?”, “Do I save any money by paying extra for premium content?”, and most importantly “Is going with this premium service worth the money I’ll be paying for it?”. When it comes to the Playstation network, the choice isn’t just obvious, it’s the most cost effective premium service out of any of the console premium services.
If you even know a little bit about the Playstation Network’s online service, then you might be asking yourself why you should pay extra if online multiplayer is already free. Well that makes sense considering something like Xbox Gold membership is required for the majority of online game access, but basic Playstation Network membership already includes online play for all their titles. It’s not the online multiplayer that makes Playstation Plus worth it, it’s the whole slew of other content that comes along with it. For starters, Playstation Plus members are given access to free games. That’s right, free games, and not just your run of the mill digital download arcade type games either. Playstation Plus members have access to the full downloads of popular titles like Little Big Planet 2 and inFAMOUS 2.
The savings don’t stop there, either. Playstation Plus members get some seriously deep price discounts on its digital download titles. Some titles received even as much as a 50% or more discount in price for Plus members or, much like the PS3 downloads, had full free downloads of their PSN only titles. Between the free downloads and sale prices of their PSN games, Sony bragged an impressive savings of over 00 for their Plus members in 2011 alone.
If that wasn’t enough for you then that’s fine, Playstation Plus isn’t done giving you more free stuff either. Plus members often get exclusive early beta access to top titles before regular demo downloads are available. Plus members in 2011 got early beta access to the new Mortal Combat and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception long before non-Plus members ever got their hands on it. Have you ever wanted to try a game without having to buy it from a store, drop -10 on a three to five day rental, or shell out a night from one of those DVD rental machines? Playstation Plus has you covered with 1 hour full game trial play of tons of titles with previously featured games like Mass Effect 2 and Borderlands.
With Playstation Plus you’re not just floating in the clouds, you’re saving in them too. Plus members are given access to up to 150MB of cloud storage for saved game files. That’s in the ballpark of up to 1000 save files depending on what games you’re playing. On top of that, you get automatic trophy syncing and keeping all your titles updated through automatic software updates for all the games you keep saves of on your HD. Don’t ever get stuck having to sign out of the network and wait for an update to play your games ever again. Getting Playstation Plus isn’t just a handful of bonus features or a few neat deals that you have to break the bank to get access to, it’s a massive yearly savings and access to exclusive content all the time and who doesn’t want to get all the special treatment they could ask for?
How To Cheat In A Computer Game
The definition of a cheat is pretty easy to figure out. If you have an affair with someone other than your lover, you can be called a cheat. If you copy answers from another person during an exam, you can also be called a cheat. In sports, if you try to win or get an advantage by disregarding the rules you are cheating but in computer games this definition become hard to follow. Taking advantage or lying to your fellow game players does not automatically mean you are cheating.
Cheating in a computer game is defined by the game and the people who are playing it.A lot of computer games come with a “cheat code”. This is usually to help a person get started and makes the game a little easier. They are usually designed for a single player. If you use these cheat codes you are cheating technically but it doesn’t mean you have an advantage.
The most common occurrence of cheating is when there are multiplayer and mass multiplayer games through the internet. In this instance, the players are not known to each other so they don’t have the restrictive influence of being seen by their opponents.
There are two main areas of cheating in computer games. You can change your settings through the use of exploits, bugs and external software or cheesing.
If you alter your computer settings, the layout of the computer’s hardware or the computer game to fit your gaming style you are cheating in a sense and this can be alright. But if you went even further and changed the brightness or the color of the screen in order to see better in shadow areas it becomes questionable.
Exploits are termed as errors in the game itself that give an advantage to one person or another. If someone deliberately uses those it a game, it could be considered cheating but it also could add to the excitement of the game.
There are software programs you can purchase that modify a program that runs computer game. This is a more serious form of cheating. Other software programs study the status of the game through the computer’s RAM
Another form of cheating is called cheesing. This is when the players do things that cannot happen in real life or are not allowed in real life.
The most common of game cheats these days find ways to change the game’s software. Even if the game developers try to encrypt or protect the files, there are software programs that will be able to change the game’s code without changing the main program. Cheats of this kind may be detected using programs that are installed on a server.
Preventing computer game cheaters is not easy. There are a lot of grey areas to agree on and consider before you term someone a cheat.
The Unique Playstation Network Experience – What’s It All About?
If you ask gamers what defines gaming, then you’re bound to get a million different answers. Some will say graphics and others will shout gameplay, soundtrack, online play, characters, stories… the list of what really defines gaming can go on forever. However, as you look, you’ll see a common theme emerge no matter how many different people you ask. What really defines gaming is the community that arises within gaming. From gamer to gamer whether online or on the couch, at events or at an arcade, gaming is defined by players connecting through their games. The Playstation Network is a singularly unique online experience that brings players together like no other.
The biggest drawing point of the Playstation Network is that you don’t lose anything with online play just because you’re not paying for a premium service. Every single game on the PS3 that supports online play is free to play online with other players around the world. This ultimate accessibility puts online gaming in the hands of anyone with an internet connection without them having to shell out every one, three, six, or twelve months to continue playing online with other gamers. Of course there’s a premium Playstation Plus service that has lots of cool features like early betas and free downloadable games, but you don’t have to subscribe to it for basic multiplayer functions.
Another unique feature of the Playstation Network is something they call the Playstation Home. It seems like with every new console there’s a way to create an “avatar” or personification of yourself to associate with your online ID, but Playstation Home takes things a step further and creates an entire online world where your Avatars can meet up and interact. Playstation Home gives users of even the basic service access to online spaces that have the atmospheres of certain genres of gaming (like action, sports, or adventure) where they can chat with each other or play games together in the virtual space. You also get your own personal space or “apartment” to customize with your own personal style and decorations to relax and chat with your friends.
Another great part of the Playstation Home is online hosting of gaming events. Events like major game releases are given their own space for PS Home users to explore, watch videos, play games, and chat to other gamers about the new game or games coming out. Even major events like this year’s E3 was hosted online where players could get information on and see videos of Sony’s new upcoming games and participate in fun trivia to earn custom clothing for their avatars.
When it comes down to the features and services offered by the various online console networks, the Playstation Network is by and large the most unique and immersive online experience that gamers can take part in. From the free online multiplayer features to the singularly unique way players can meet and interact with each other, the Playstation Network has more to offer than any other console network.
Game Play in Online Arcade Games
The basic strength of most of the online arcade games is its simple yet addictive game play. The fact that most of these games had a minimalist graphic design allowed its designers to concentrate more on improving the game play.
Arcade games have good ‘game mechanics’. The games are essentially created to promote an atmosphere of fun. Arcade games have an easy learning curve which attracts people of all ages.
The most successful arcade games have been the fighter series which include Street fighter, King of Fighters, Mortal Kombat and Fatal Fury.
These games survived purely on their intense game play which involves a rapid carnage of joystick and the buttons. Yet, they went on to become the base for more sophisticated games like Dead or Alive.
Arcade Games like Tetris and Bejeweled involved game play that required one to rack their brains in order to succeed. These games have entertainment as well as the mental development quotient to them.
The intense game play that these games boost is what makes them a favorite even in the intensely competitive gaming industry. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 comes pre-loaded with an arcade puzzle game, Hexic HD. Most of the Xbox Live arcade games have multiplayer support over Xbox Live.
The arcade gaming fans can certainly look forward to more titles coming their way on the Xbox 360. Sony’s PSP is also releasing revamped models of old classics hoping to capture the handheld market.
Why Do People Play Online Games
In a recent article on CNET, William Moss observes that in an Internet cafe in China, of the couple of hundred people using the cafe when he visited it, with the exception of two people, everyone else was seen using them to play computer games.
People paying money just to play online games on hourly basis show the pull and popularity of the online games.
Here is an attempt to understand why online games are so popular these days?
An online game literally refers to the type of game, which is played on your computer while you are connected to the Internet. These can be single player games that you play with a remote server or multiplayer games where many users like you are playing with each other.
There was a time when computer games were for the so-called nerds or geeks who were basically solitary beings. With the rise in popularity of the Internet and with broadband access becoming increasingly affordable, the quality of free online games being offered has increased dramatically. Playing games online is no longer a solitary activity. Studies show that it is a social experience that more and more extroverts and out-going people are becoming part of.
Free gaming sites have become the places for players to meet and have social interactions. Popular regulars at gaming sites are a common phenomenon that we all are aware of. These gaming sites typically offer games that range from a quick, casual game during your coffee break to engaging multi-player games.
Why do people play online games?
a. Firstly, the appeal of anonymity. After all you can create a personality for yourself and can be what ever you want to be. This is a very powerful reason for people to hang out at these social sites.
b. Internet is a wonderful medium that enables you to be part of a society where all are equal. Absolutely no discrimination of any variety.
c. The games are becoming increasingly easy to setup. Most of the times you just don’t need a native installation on your PC. A web browser is all you need to play a multiplayer game. This has taken away the operating system related hurdles that one would otherwise have encountered. These games are mostly free and on top of that you don’t have to install anything to enable you to play these games. You just heard of game, perhaps from a friend or through an email or a newsletter. You just go to the gaming website and you are ready to play. No setup related hassles at all. This definitely is a very big contributor to the success and popularity of online games.
d. Online games are popular because they give people who are bored playing with their computer a chance to interact with real opponents. As a player you can chat with other players, you can join hands a few players and scheme against the others, just the way you do in real world, but with the advantage of anonymity.
I am sure there are more reasons. This in itself can be a topic of research for social scientists. Internet is changing the way we live. It is changing the way we play for sure.
Why Xbox Live Puts The Competition To Shame
With how interconnected people are through social networking, wireless devices, and just in general, any system that doesn’t support people coming together in a simple way is doomed to failure. This is especially true when it comes to video games since online multiplayer and progress tracking and comparison are so important in gaming communities. It’s these reasons that put the Xbox 360’s Xbox Live service miles ahead of the competition with hits innovative features, simple interface, and excellent premium service.
First of all, there are two different online services Microsoft offers, the basic Silver and the premium Gold service for XBL. Silver is the basic package and has no monthly fee, it gives you access to all of the basic features of Xbox live like making an account and accessing the marketplace. Silver users can track their progress through achievements online with other players, private chat (single person to person chat), send messages, and generally communicate with your friends through the network. You also, as I mentioned before, get access to the Xbox Live marketplace which is where you can download additional game content, try game demos, buy full games available in digital download format, and also rent or buy movies and music through the available media services.
Gold on the other hand practically unlocks the most useful feature of the Xbox Live service, which is the online multiplayer functions you’re looking for with an online gaming service. Silver users can still play through split screen or system connect (essentially LAN play) but if you want to play online with other people, you need to purchase Gold. Now you might be asking yourself why you’d want to pay for an online play service when there are other platforms that offer a free service for online play and the answer is simple. Xbox Live has the best network and features the most players out of any of their competitors’ online networks. With other consoles’ online services, you can often be left in a lobby for hours looking for opponents or you’ll log into a game world with a significantly decreased population because even though it’s a paid service, Xbox Live has more members playing more games more often.
Online multiplayer isn’t the only perk for Gold members, though, Gold members also enjoy a number of other benefits that Silver members don’t get access to. Party chat lets you chat with a group of friends even if you’re playing different games on of offline. Gold members also often get special deals and discounts on online content like DLC or Xbox Live Arcade games not to mention that there are some achievements and content for games that you can only complete or access by playing online. Gold also grants access to advanced dashboard and media features like YouTube, Netflix, and the Bing search bar for your dashboard. Due to its stable, high quality network and huge array of features for its premium service, Xbox Live and Xbox Live Gold, Microsoft’s Xbox Live is easily the best online service available today.
Mobile Gaming Explained
If you’re not familiar with mobile games, you will be soon because this is the next big area of growth expected in the billion dollar gaming market. A mobile game is a computer software game played on a mobile phone. Mobile games are usually downloaded via the mobile operator’s network, but in some cases games are also loaded into the mobile handsets when purchased, or via infrared connection, Bluetooth or memory card. Mobile games are developed using technologies such as DoCoMo’s DoJa, Sun’s J2ME, Qualcomm’s BREW (Binary Runtime for Wireless) or Infusio’s ExEn (Execution Environment). Other platforms are also available, but not as common.
The different platforms
BREW is the more powerful technology, giving, as it does, complete control of the handset and complete access to its functionality. However this unchecked power could be dangerous, and for this reason BREW development process is tailored mainly towards recognised software vendors. While the BREW SDK (Software Development Kit) is freely available, running software on real mobile hardware (as opposed to the provided emulator) requires a digital signature which can only be generated with tools issued by a handful of parties, namely mobile content providers and Qualcomm themselves. Even then, the game will only work on test enabled devices. To be downloadable on regular phones the software must be checked, tested and given approval by Qualcomm via their TRUE BREW Testing programme.
Java (aka “J2ME” / “Java ME” / “Java 2 Micro Edition”) runs atop a Virtual Machine (called the KVM) which allows reasonable, but not complete, access to the functionality of the underlying phone. This extra layer of software provides a solid barrier of protection which seeks to limit damage from erroneous or malicious software. It also allows Java software to move freely between different types of phone (and other mobile device) containing radically different electronic components, without modification. The price that is paid is a modest decrease in the potential speed of the game and the inability to utilise the entire functionality of a phone (as Java software can only do what this middle-man layer supports.)
Because of this extra security and compatibility, it is usually a quite simple process to write and distribute Java mobile applications, including games, to a wide range of phones. Usually all that is needed is a freely available Java Development Kit for creating Java software itself, the accompanying Java ME tools (known as the Java Wireless Toolkit) for packaging and testing mobile software, and space on a web server (web site) to host the resulting application once it is ready for public release.
Current limitations of mobile games
Mobile games tend to be small in scope and often rely on good gameplay over flashy graphics, due to the lack of processing power of the client devices. One major problem for developers and publishers of mobile games is describing a game in such detail that it gives the customer enough information to make a purchasing decision. Currently, mobile games are sold through network carriers and operators portals, meaning there are only a few lines of text and perhaps a screenshot of the game to entice the customer. There is a reliance on powerful brands and licences such as Tomb Raider or Colin McRae, a racing game. There is also the use of well-known and established play patterns, meaning game play mechanics that are instantly recognizable in games like Tetris, Space Invaders or Poker. Both these strategies are used to entice mobile gamers to purchase games for a fee when a limited amount of additonal information is provided by the wireless carrier, who typically acts as a third party hosting the game.
Recent innovations in mobile games include Singleplayer, Multiplayer and 3D graphics. Virtual love games belong to both of singleplayer and multiplayer games. Multiplayer games are quickly finding an audience, as players find the ability to play against other people, a natural extension of their mobile phone’s connectivity.
Xbox 360 Live: Massive Multiplayer Online
In the days of Pong, it would have been hard to imagine all the video games we take for granted these days. Handheld, high-tech, dancing on a mat that’s recorded by the TV. It would have seemed surreal.
Well, the surreal has become real and the newest addition to the video game revolution is Xbox 360 Live, a truly multimedia, multiplayer experience that surpasses anything we’ve previously understood about video games.
Though many people like to play video games with a friend, it is largely seen as a singular, solitary activity. But with the addition of Xbox 360 Live to the video game lineup, things are socially kickin’ now.
Simply put, Xbox 360 Live is an online gaming service using your Xbox or Xbox 360 video console. You subscribe to the service, and then can play games with or against friends or other players around the world. There are more than 100 Xbox games that are enabled for this service, and all Xbox 360 games are at least “Xbox 360 Live aware”.
What’s most striking about Xbox 360 Live is the method by which you communicate with others. Through a headset that’s either bundled with your gaming system or purchased separately, you can voice or text message your friends or other players. While you are signed on, you can see what your friends are doing, even to the extent you can tell what game they are playing and what level they are on.
Truly, this is not your dad’s Atari.
So, how do you get in on this interesting form of play? First, you should own an Xbox 360 video gaming system. Then you have to subscribe to the service, and given the features, it is surprisingly affordable.
There are a variety of ways to subscribe to Xbox 360 live. If you choose the gold package (most popular), you can get:
– Access to online multiplayer games
– Ability to download Xbox 360 content and access to other downloads
– Enhanced ability to manage your list of friends
How do you purchase these services? There are a few ways. You can purchase a bundle at a store (currently available with rebates) and install. You can also purchase cards with time on them.
– You can purchase a 12-month Xbox 360 Live subscription card for about or a 3-month subscription card for around .
– If you purchase the 3-month premium gold pack, you receive a headset, a 3-month gold membership, 100 Microsoft points, and the Xbox Live arcade game, Joust. This costs about but currently has a rebate.
– Go for the big daddy and purchase the 12-month premium gold pack. This will get you a 12-month membership, the Xbox 360 headset, the Xbox Live arcade game, Bankshot Billiards, and 200 Microsoft points. This costs about , but currently has a rebate.
If you’re not sure you want to pay for a membership, there is a free 48-hour trial offer, which allows you to try the service before deciding if you want to subscribe. Like any free trial, this is a great way to decide if this is the right service for you.
What The Virtual World Has To Offer – ORPGs
The Online Role Playing Game
The venue is the virtual world. Numerous individuals
participate, meet, and play with each other. These are
the occurrences in massively multiplayer online
role-playing game (MMORPG). These are computer role
playing games which developed from continuous
improvement of online multi user games. It was Richard
Garriott who coined the term MMORPG. He is the creator
of the game which popularized MMORPG, Ultima Online.
A fictional fantasy world is the usual setting in most
role playing games. The gamers build their own
character (avatar) and take control of the avatar’s
skill and abilities. They can customize their avatars
to match their personality. Every game in the online
RPGs comprises of different characters with different
trait and responsibilities. They can be categorized
into melee, ranged, and magic users.
What Makes MMORPGs Different
Massively multiplayer online role playing games can be
recognized from the usual computer role playing games
by the number of players and the virtual world where
the game is situated. Computer role playing games can
only cater to single player modes whilst massively
multiplayer online role-playing games can cater to
thousands of gamers at one time.
The world that the game is themed from is another
factor that differentiates the two genres. A
repetitive and constant setting is found on computer
role playing games. Because of the way it is
programmed, each time the gamers in computer RPGs
plays a game, the same episodes are repeated.
On the contrary, MMORPGs’ provide an environment that
lives on its own. That means that even if the player
is away or online, the game continues to evolve and
Because of the popularity MMORPG has gained, it is not
surprising to know that revenues rose dramatically
over the years just so it could keep up with the world
wide demand of online gamers.
In 2005 alone, about half a billion US dollars have
been given to MMORPGs. Western revenues have been
allotted with about one million dollars.
Most online role-playing games feature living
economies. Virtual items and currency have to be
gained while playing the game and have definite value
for the players. Such a virtual economy can be
analyzed and has value in economic research and can
even have a dramatic impact on the economies of the
One of the early researchers of MMORPGs, particularly
Edward Castronova, stated that the supply-and-demand
market for virtual items is existing. It even crossed
over the real world as much as the virtual one.
Crossover requirements are some of the following: The
player’s ability to sell in-game items for virtual
currency, trading of items which have the similar
value, the purchase of game items with real money, and
the exchange of real money with in-game money.
The idea of exchanging real currency virtual currency
or in-game items has had a significant effect on both
the players and game industries. People who make a
living out of the virtual economies are termed as
“gold farmers” and can be employed through the game
shops or private forums.
Real currencies in exchange for virtual money and
in-game items are usually prohibited by game
publishers. However, because of necessity this
exchange cannot be avoided. An example of this is
“Entropia Universe”, an online game that allows real
money in exchange for game money and vice versa.
When Did Couch Co-Op Die? Oh Wait, It Didn’t.
Answer me honestly here, when was the last time you didn’t have to pop on a headset or log onto a network when you wanted to play a multiplayer game? When was the last real time you sat down with a couple of your friends and worked together (or against each other!) while playing some of your favorite games? If you don’t own a Wii, then the answer to that question could well be years ago or even never! In spite of the focus on online and network gaming that other consoles may tout as a key feature to their games, Nintendo has consistently put out amazing releases that are sitting gamers side by side and letting them enjoy games while they enjoy each other’s company.
When it comes to party games, the Wii is hands down the go-to gaming console. Its successful Mario Party franchise practically invented the “party board game” genre and that tradition holds strong with each new release of the game, incorporating new motion play and team play features alongside new game modes. On top of Mario Party, there are lesser known slam dunk titles like Fortune Street and Wario Ware: Smooth moves that invigorate any get-together with their competitive play modes and funky motion gameplay (respectively, of course).
Fighter fans don’t feel left out either, while the Wii might not be the premiere console for fighting game releases, it still has its share of amazing fighting games available. If you haven’t played Super Smash Bros. Brawl, then it’s quite possible you’ve been under a rock for the past few years. Boasting the largest roster of the three games, it’s a fantastic party fighting game despite its aging release date. Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars (of the famous VS series) brings more of a classic fighter feel to the Wii with its cast of unexpected characters and crisp cel-shaded graphics. Fans of anime themed fighting games are sure to have a heyday with multiple Dragon Ball, Naruto and Bleach fighting titles to tickle your fancy no matter your fandom.
Nothing, however, beats the prideful feeling of working together with your friends to reach the end of a game. Nintendo feeds the action/adventure gamer’s appetite well with its multiple co-op titles. The insatiable yet familiar pink puffball reprises his starring role in the amazing retro styled game Kirby: Return to Dreamland featuring simultaneous 4-player co-op platforming. Not to be outdone, Rayman: Origins is another 4-player platforming game familiar to classic Sony fans with a focus on teamwork to complete puzzles and run through stages. And what co-op game list is complete without mentioning New Super Mario Bros., a reboot of the classic sidescrolling Mario games (once again for up to four players!).
The next time you’re itching to play a multiplayer game, don’t flop down on your couch and wait in some multiplayer lobby to be matched up with strangers somewhere else around the world. Get on the phone, order a pizza for you and your friends, and have a gaming session where you’re actually face to face with the people you like to hang out with.
Xbox 360’s Top 5 Multiplayer/Online Games That Are WAY Too Fun
Have you ever been sitting on your dashboard wishing that you had some friends to play with? Been sifting through your hard drive’s contents looking for a game where you can have a blast with on Xbox Live? There are tons of great games out for the Xbox 360, but many of them are single player games which are a lot of fun, but ultimately leave you sitting alone playing them from start to finish. Here’s a list of the best games for hopping online (or onto the couch) with a group of friends and playing with or against each other on:
1. Castle Crashers: Do you remember spending hours at the arcade plopping quarter after quarter into the machines with your friends as you scrolled across the screen beating the crap out of pixelated bad guys? Even if you don’t, Castle Crashers makes for an amazingly fun game for up to four players to take a nostalgia trip into medieval times. Play as one of four knights (or tons of unlockable characters) in a world designed by the guys who brought us Alien Hominid as you hack, slash, and magic your way through an expansive (and hilarious) world in the perfect old-school style gaming adventure.
2. Call of Duty (Series): The Call of Duty series has been known for being the absolute top military shooter of all time, holding records for copies sold and making them some of the most played games on the Xbox 360 today. With fiercely competitive multiplayer and an immersive campaign, games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2/3 and Black Ops are the games to play if you’re a hardcore first person shooter fan.
3. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3: The newest iteration of the Marvel vs Capcom franchise, UmvC 3 takes fighting games to an entirely new level. With its retro styled graphics and massive cast of characters, UmvC 3 lives up the legacy of its predecessors with its intense single player modes, but the online matches is where the game really heats up. Whether playing against friends or on the ranked leaderboards, UmvC 3 is one of the best places you can find to show off your fighting prowess against some of the best fighting gamers in the world.
4. Minecraft: Minecraft started out small as an indie smash hit among PC gamers, but the phenomenon has spread like a blocky virus through the world’s gaming population. The game has everything for any kind of gamer to enjoy from the casual builder to the adventure gamer to the amateur architect designing sprawling cities across Xbox Live’s multiplayer servers. Even if you have the game for PC, the Xbox version is worth picking up if only for the massive player community on Xbox Live.
5. Battlefield 3: Battlefield 3 is known as the Call of Duty series’ main rival in the military shooter genre, but they’re such different games it’s hard to compare. With a completely different formula than the CoD series, Battlefield 3 focuses on squad based play over sprawling city maps featuring destructible buildings, vehicle combat, and graphics powered by the beautiful Frostbite 2 engine. If you’re a shooter fan, this game definitely deserves a place on your shelf.
Types Of Video Games
Video games are sorted into many categories depending on the content. Going by that rule, many games fit into multiple categories. Nevertheless, we can understand the type of almost all games, by a description of the type, which they closely match. Here, a list of the popular game categories is given. However, there are still more games out there which do not fall into this listing.
Action (First Person Shooting):
This is by far one of the most popular computer games. The player acts as a character and he looks either through the character’s eyes or over his shoulder. The player/character moves through a series of obstacles, killing or avoiding enemies and over to the next level. The games generally have a time limit to complete a task and may lose a life or fail the level if the objective can not achieved within the time limit. The settings for the games vary from historical wars to fantasy universe wars.
Action games can further be classified as Stealth Games. While enemies are killed in Action games, Stealth Games require that enemies should be avoided or if necessary killed without attracting attention.
Racing and driving games are another popular type of games. Both Motor Bike racing and Car racing games are available. The player gets to drive and has to compete against other drivers. Circuits as in reality racing, modification and choosing of vehicles are some of the specialties of this type of game.
Role Playing Game:
This is more or less like the First Person Shooting game. However, unlike the first person game, the game may be played as long as the story line is completed.
As the name suggests the player gets to play a character, which fights with other computer controlled, or player controlled characters. The aim is to win as in all types of games.
This is a mix and match of FPS (First Person Shooting) and RPG (Role Playing Game). The majority of games in this type are war games.
Players get to play group sports like rugby and basketball or single participant games like skate boarding. Players may get to control the team as a whole or a single character that is on the field.
As the name suggests, this is simulating, for instance, piloting an airplane, building a city etc.
This type of games requires more of the brain than brawn. It requires a level of thinking and understanding to solve the puzzles.
This type of games is for those people who are not serious gamers. It has no story or strategy and when one has time to kill, these games are played. Cell phone games are categorized into this list.
Games where the player has to jump on to or from suspended platforms or obstacles can be termed as platform games.
Where two or more players play a game simultaneously, competing against each other or playing as a team to achieve a goal is called multiplayer gaming.
Video games played over the internet are called online games.
Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPGs):
This is a combination of Role Playing Games (RPG) and Online games, where people from all over the world play games hosted by the publishers.
Backgammon is an easy game to learn, and it provides a fun, fast-paced break for novices and experts alike. Perhaps that’s why backgammon has long been a favorite two-player board game. The Internet has given backgammon new tech savvy, and created interest in a whole new generation of players.
Multiplayer backgammon is played online, so you will often have many people from all over the world playing in the same game room, at the same time. You’ll find online multiplayer backgammon being played in casinos, in game rooms, and anywhere people like to gather to play free games. Backgammon can be played fast to accommodate advanced players, or more slowly for beginners.
In backgammon, the object of the game is to move all of your pieces to the opposite side of the board, and accumulate the most points. Any of your unprotected playing pieces are at risk of being strategically removed by your opponent. Similarly, your opponent can lose unprotected pieces to you. If your moves are blocked you can lose a turn, or you can block your opponent’s moves to cause him or her to miss a turn. It is possible to win by having the most points, even if you have lost playing pieces to your opponent.
Multiplayer backgammon starts with the setup. Each player is given fifteen playing pieces. You will have pieces in one colour, for example, red, and your opponent will use playing pieces of a different colour, for example, white. Unlike chess, which has different pieces to perform different tasks, all of your pieces are uniform size and shape.
On the innermost portion of the board are points nineteen to twenty-four. This is the area that your red pieces will start on. The opposite side of the boards, on points one through six, is where your opponent’s white pieces will be placed. The middle sections of the board are considered the “vertical area”. The object of multiplayer backgammon is to move your pieces around to the inner portion of the board, and then “counting them off” or removing the pieces from the board. If you are first to remove your pieces, you win.
When playing multiplayer backgammon online you find many games being played at one time. Multiple game tables are set up in virtual game rooms, so that many people can play at the same time. There are often multiplayer backgammon tournaments going on as well. During these tournaments, multiple boards are played over the course of a few days. The winners of each game move on to play in the next round.
Multiplayer backgammon can be fun and exciting to watch, even if you are not playing the game yourself. In watching others play, you are able to pick up new strategies and find out how to play the various types of backgammon that are out there.
Once you have learned the game and are comfortable with the strategy, you are ready to enter a playing room online. Find an empty seat at an existing table, or start a new game and wait for an opponent. When you and your opponent are situated, you’re ready to play multiplayer backgammon. There are also solitaire backgammon games available online for those who prefer to sharpen their skills by playing against the computer.
